Governor Kihika Highlights Development Strides in Nakuru Town East

Written by Roy Lumbe

Nakuru County Governor Susan Kihika has outlined significant development strides across Nakuru Town East Sub-County, ranging from education and health to agriculture, trade, water, housing, infrastructure, and sports.

Speaking during a consultative meeting with opinion leaders and residents at Afraha Secondary School, Governor Kihika—accompanied by Nakuru Town East MP David Gikaria and other leaders—said her administration has focused on projects that directly uplift the lives of residents.

She noted that education has been a top priority, with Sh50.6 million disbursed in bursaries to 9,087 students this year, and six learners fully sponsored in secondary schools. The fortified porridge programme, according to Kihika, is reaching 6,500 ECDE pupils, while new vocational training centres and classrooms are being developed across the wards.

In health, she said the county has renovated Muguga Dispensary, completed the theatre block at Bondeni Hospital, and constructed a 16-bed maternity unit at Menengai Health Centre.

Langalanga and Mirugi Kariuki hospitals are now offering 24-hour services, while backup power generators are being installed at Bondeni and Langalanga. The governor also urged residents to enrol in the Social Health Authority (SHA), which she said was easing hospital bills.

In agriculture, she said more than 10,000 animals have been vaccinated, 2,632 inseminated, while farmers have received poultry and avocado seedlings to boost household income.

According to Kihika, through the Wezesha Fund, community groups have accessed Sh950,000, while SACCOs have benefited from Sh5.9 million. A separate Sh30 million fund for bodaboda loans has also been set aside on more affordable repayment terms.

Other notable projects include the rehabilitation of Wakulima and Free Area markets, the Muguga Climate-Smart Agriculture project, sewer connections in Flamingo, and the revamping of Lions Garden. In housing, the county has removed asbestos roofing in estates and implemented street lighting and road works at Lake View and Kwa Murogi estates.

On infrastructure, the county has completed the tarmacking of Shabaab Matatu Stage, installed Soilo–Barnabas street lighting, and is concreting the Wakulima access road.

In sports, Phase One of Afraha Stadium has been finalised, complete with a tartan track and football pitch. At the same time, new facilities have been established at Kamukunji Grounds, St. Teresa’s, and Bondeni Gym.

She noted that the national government, through President William Ruto, has also made key contributions, including the completion of 605 housing units at Bondeni, advertisement of an additional 1,144 units, progress on the Mzee Wanyama ESP Market, and the upcoming Rironi–Mau Summit road dualing.

Also present at the meeting were MPs Samuel Arama (Nakuru Town West), Irene Njoki (Bahati), Joseph Tonui (Kuresoi South), Charity Kathambi (Njoro), Woman Rep Liza Chelule, Assembly Deputy Speaker Anthony Kanyere, and MCAs David Muraya (Flamingo), Fadhili Msuri (Biashara), and Neto Sakwa (Kivumbini), Ann Wamaitha and Dorcas Gathere (Nominated).
